Tomahawk And Genie: Two New Wheats Suited To SA!

Tomahawk CL Wheat has been released for the 2024 growing season. An AGT variety, tested as RAC3261, Tomahawk will be a Clearfield Scepter type. Trials show it looks to be the highest-yielding Clearfield across SA and VIC, bridging the gaps between Clearfields and conventional varieties. However, Tomahawk will only be an APW classification.

It will offer similar disease resistance, physical grain quality, adaptation, and maturity as Scepter, with a slightly higher yield. Provisional disease ratings will be MR for Stem Rust, MSS for Stripe Rust, S for Leaf Rust, MRMS for CCN, MRMS for Yellow Leaf Spot, S for Septoria & SVS for Powdery Mildew.

Another new variety worth looking at is Genie.

Intergrain’s Genie looks to be a replacement for Rockstar. It will be a high-yielding variety with AH grain quality. It is a mid-slow maturity, which will be slightly later than Rockstar, meaning it is well suited for late April sowing in the medium-high rainfall zones. In these environments, Intergrain are expecting a 1-2% yield improvement over Rockstar, however, also comes with a strong disease package. Genie has a long coleoptile which comes in handy for marginal moisture starts, or to get down a little deeper away from damaging pre-emergent chemistry. Early internal testing has shown good sprouting tolerance, another improvement over Rockstar.

Provisional disease ratings will be MR for Stem Rust, MRMS for Stripe Rust, MS for CCN, & MS for Yellow Leaf Spot.
