The new release of two new IMI Field Peas
It’s official. Grains Innovation Australia, along with AG Schilling & Co Seeds at Kadina, have been working on two new imi tolerant field peas, which have recently been released.
The varieties are GIA Ourstar – a ‘dun’ type, and GIA Kastar – a ‘Kaspa’ type.
Both of these will offer improved tolerance to common in-crop and residual Group B herbicides, increasing the flexibility of our farming systems.
Let’s take a look at each:
GIA Ourstar is an early to mid-flowering, semi leafless variety with a relatively long flowering window. It has a semi-erect growth habit, as well as pod shattering resistance at maturity. It has a disease profile similar to PBA Oura, with S to MS for bacterial blight – meaning they aren’t suitable for areas prone to this disease.
GIA Kastar is a mid-flowering, semi leafless variety with an erect growth habit and pod shattering resistance at maturity. Its disease package is similar to Wharton, including resistance to powdery mildew.
In NVTs, both varieties have yielded 1-10% lower than Oura and Wharton across southern and western Australia without the presence of Group B herbicide.
