A barley variety with high yields and an excellent disease package? Yep, Combat can.
New Combat barley is being marketed as an alternative to Rosalind, with its yields in the 2022 National Variety Trials (NVT) coming in above the benchmark variety at most of the local trial sites at Salter Springs, Spalding, Bute, and Turretfield.
Combat is described as a broadly adapted, mid-season feed variety. It’s a high-yielding variety suited to earlier sowing and has better weed competition than Rosalind. Combat’s semi-prostrate plant growth habit is combined with good early vigour and boasts a much larger grain size than Rosalind, resulting in improved grain plumpness.
During four years in InterGrain yield trials and one year in NVT, Combat performed consistently well across a range of cropping regions, particularly in environments below 3.5 tonnes per hectare. It’s also shown good adaptability in higher-yielding environments.
Combat offers an excellent disease-resistance package, which notably includes very good powdery mildew resistance and good levels of spot form of net blotch resistance (SFNB). It also has moderate levels of resistance to leaf rust and is moderately susceptible to net form net blotch (NFNB).
