Here’s a sneak peek at some key new cereal varieties making their way onto the scene in 2025.
Shotgun Wheat
Shotgun Wheat is out of AGT breeding program tested as RAC3227 and they are calling it a “Clear” Scepter replacement, with a significant yield advantage, even over Calibre. NVT results from last year show that it the top performer on average in the state.
It has been derived from Scepter and will be agronomically very similar, suited to all growing areas across SA. It has the same maturity (Mid-Season) and plant type as Scepter and has been given an AH quality classification. Its disease package is also very similar to Scepter, offering small improvements on Powdery Mildew and Stripe Rust.

Early indications for disease are below, all are currently provisional:
Stem Rust MRMS
Stripe Rust MS
Leaf Rust MSS
Yellow Leaf Spot MRMS
Powdery Mildew S
Septoria Tritici Blotch S
CCN MRMS
Mammoth Wheat
Intergrain has released Mammoth, tested as IGW6755. It is a unique, very slow-maturing spring APW wheat with excellent yield potential across all environments when sown in its ideal sowing window. Mammoth’s unique phenology makes it an excellent option for an early break scenario, from late March to mid-April. Unlike winter wheats that have similar maturity, Mammoth does not have the same vernalisation requirement, allowing it to continue to develop using day length rather than needing low temperatures to trigger flowering like winter varieties need. This attribute is advantageous in both high and low rainfall regions as it allows Mammoth to respond to seasonal conditions and minimize frost risk.
Granite CL Barley
Intergrain’s next release is Granite CL, tested as IGB21092T. This variety is an exciting new Clearfield® feed barley for low-medium rainfall areas with excellent yield potential. In Intergrain’s internal trials, Granite CL is the highest yielding herbicide-tolerant variety in yield environments below 3t/ha and a 6% yield improvement over Rosalind. Granite CL also offers an excellent disease package including good resistance levels to spot form net blotch and net form net blotch.
Bigfoot CL Barley
AGT has released Bigfoot CL, tested as AGTB0669. It will be AGT’s first barley variety tolerant to Clearfield Intervix herbicide. Bigfoot CL is a higher-yielding alternative to Maximus CL and Commodus CL, a quick-mid maturing variety with good grain size and test weight. Bigfoot CL has a Compass-style plant type but is shorter and has a lower risk of lodging. Bigfoot CL is deliverable as feed quality only.
Pegasus AX Barley
AGAGT’sext barley will be named Pegasus AX, tested as AGTB0667. It is the next release for the CoAXium Production System and carries tolerance to Aggressor herbicide (Quizalofop-P-Ethyl). Pegasus AX is a derivative of Rosalind and has a similar plant type, which offers a short plant structure and lower risk of lodging than the Compass plant types (Titan AX). Pegasus AX will have a wide adaptation, quick-mid maturity that is similar to Maximus CL and has similar grain size as other high yielding feed varieties. Pegasus AX is a feed variety only.
RGT Atlantis
RAGT has released RGT Atlantis Barley, Atlantis is exciting as it has something a little different. Atlantis is simply a waterlogging tolerant Planet, it has the same high yield potential you see with Planet, and is well suited to the medium & high rainfall zone areas. In these higher rainfall areas we can often see periods of abiotic stress and low soil oxygen, the breeding of Atlantis has introduced structures called ‘aerenchyma’ these structures allow oxygen to remain in the roots during extended periods of waterlogging keeping the plants growing. Under these conditions it can outyield Planet by more than 20%, and in normal conditions will be on par. More details to come.
Goldie Milling Oats
For the 2025 season Intergrain have released Goldie Oats. Goldie is a high yielding milling oat, 4-5% higher than Bannister, topping NVTs across Victoria, Southern NSW and here in SA. It has a mid-spring maturity, 4-7 days earlier to flower than Bannister and similar to Bilby. A tall plant height, 5cm taller than Bannister and 15cm taller than Bilby with good panicle emergence even under tough conditions.
It has a strong grain quality package, including reduced screenings and high-test weight and an added bonus is preliminary hay yield data looks promising.

Early signs are that it will have a similar disease package to Bannister with good CCN resistance (MR). Septoria is a MS, Stem Rust S, Red Leather Leaf SVS.
Minnie Milling Oats
Intergrain’s other milling oat release, Minnie, is a high-yielding grain oat with a mid-slow maturity, similar to Bannister. It has a short-medium plant height, improving its lodging tolerance and harvestability compared to taller varieties in high-yielding situations. As Minnie has a short-medium stature, it may not be suitable as a dual-purpose grain and hay variety, but further testing is underway. Early indications are Minnie will be MSS for Septoria, SMS for Leaf Rust, S for Stem Rust, R for CNN & VS for Red Leather Leaf.
