Neo CL & Cyclops Barleys Make Malt

Neo CL & Cyclops Barleys Make Malt

Neo CL and Cyclops barley varieties have been approved for malting accreditation by Grains Australia.

Neo CL is out of InterGrain and is a game-changing barley with an exceptionally high yield potential and outstanding disease package. Cyclops by AGT is broadly adapted and best suits low to moderate rainfall regions.

As with all previous accreditations, the market will determine the success of these new varieties; however, agronomically, both have good fits in the areas they are suited for.

Titan AX barley had insufficient grain to complete full evaluation in 2024 and will continue Stage Two evaluation this year.

Here’s a quick look at Neo CL and Cyclops below.

Neo CL Summary from Intergrain:

Neo CL’s complete package of exceptionally high yield, outstanding disease resistance and extremely promising quality attributes has the potential to revolutionise the barley industry. NEOP CL is a mid-maturing Clearfield® barley with exceptional yield potential.

Cyclops summary from AGT:

Cyclops is a high yielding malt variety with very wide adaptation across low, medium and high rainfall environments, although its greatest value to growers is in the medium to low rainfall regions of western and southern Australia. It has good physical grain quality and disease resistance

Compared to current market leader Maximus, Cyclops has shown a yield advantage of nearly 4% in WA NVT trials, and nearly 7% in NVT trial in SA, Victoria and southern NSW.

Cyclops has a quick-mid maturity, reaching awn peep slightly later than Spartacus CL. The short plant type of Cyclops is similar to Maximus CL and Spartacus CLP resulting in reduced susceptibility to lodging compared with taller barley varieties. Head loss is similar to Maximus CL or Spartacus CL, meaning that Cyclops is less vulnerable to yield loss during windy conditions around harvest compared with some other varieties.
