Mouse Activity Update 2023

GRDC have released their mouse monitoring update, which lists our areas as low to moderate. However, keep in mind numbers were still breeding up in April. Click here to check it out.

At this stage, although numbers are low to moderate, given the good yields last year, lots of ground cover, and plenty to keep you busy right now and looking elsewhere, it’s important to monitor mice numbers as they won’t take long to breed up. Focus particularly on barley and paddocks where it’s more likely head loss occurred.

If you do see activity, do your community a favour and report it to Mouse Alert by FeralScan – you can find them here, or you can also download their app – link on their website.

You’ll get a good idea by heading out and walking through paddocks, but check our tips to get an idea on mice activity, such as counting holes, or download and use our chew cards.

If you need use bait, there’s plenty of options now that the double strength active has been registered. Both strengths come in sterile and non-sterile options depending on your cropping situation. If you’re unsure, check out our article on what bait you should use.

Why use the new double strength? Well, the old 25g bait works well if there aren’t many other food sources available and mice can eat two or three grains and get a lethal dose. However, if there’s other food available and they don’t eat enough, they can become bait-shy. This is where the 50g active bait works well, as a much lower dose will have a lethal effect and, thus, higher overall effectiveness on paddock numbers.
