Are you growing Scope or Spartacus barley? Are you thinking of using imi products? You may want to carefully consider the decision, as foreign MRL’s may impact your market access.
Barley Industry Imi Update:
The Barley Industry has put out another update regarding markets requirements for imi tolerant barley. The news is that the Industry is seeking overseas governments to adopt imi MRLs that are more in line with the ones we have here in Australia. However, this a complicated process. Timelines are uncertain and difficult to predict. There is also the uncertainty that any new changes will even be successful. Unfortunately, this most likely means that revised MRLs won’t be in place for the 2019 harvest.
The Industry is encouraging growers to speak with their relevant bulk handling companies and grain buyers and keep them updated with plans for handling imi tolerant barley varieties (Spartacus CL, Scope CL) treated with imi products. They also encourage participation in any bulk handler surveys seeking information on the potential use of imi chemicals. As well as attend grower meetings to ensure a co-ordinated industry approach is maintained.
We want growers to be aware that market access may be restricted to some markets, such as Japan and South Korea. Even if you’ve complied with recommended label rates, you may still not meet MRL’s for these countries. So we advise growers to check with your relevant grain buyer ahead of harvest to ensure they’ll accept imi treated barley.
Imi products that are registered for use in Barley are Intercept/Intervix (post-em) and Sentry (pre-em).

Now for some good news for Bendoc Bean growers.
A recent permit now allows the use of Nufarm’s Intercept on Bendoc Beans.
As of the 30th of April, a permit has been put in place to allow the use of Nufarm’s Intercept herbicide on imidazolinone-tolerant faba beans, i.e. the new Bendoc variety. The permit allows the use of Intercept at 750ml/ha. Directions include to apply it as a foliar spray at early postemergence at the 4-5 leaf stage, in a water volume of 100L/ha. Apply to actively growing broadleaf weeds in the 2 to 6 leaf stage and grass weeds up to the 2 tiller stage.
However, be aware there is a restriction that only one application spray is allowed per crop.
Also note, that there is a 28-day grazing or cutting for stock feed withholding period.
