eID Tag Support Extended Until 2027 in SA

Some good news for SA producers! On Friday, 13 June, the State Government announced the extension of the eID subsidy. This means the eID tag discount will be sticking around for another two years, but at a reduced amount to what it has been. The scheme was meant to wrap up on 30 June 2025, but with farmers doing it tough, it’s been extended through to mid-2027.

What’s different?

Previously, you would have received a 50% rebate, up to a cap of 95 cents (excluding GST), for each eligible tag, which ended on 30 June 2025.
From 1 July this year, the ‘Expanded eID Device Rebate’ will provide a 25% rebate, up to 47.5 cents, per tag until 30 June 2027.

So, here’s the gist:

From 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027, you’ll still be able to buy NLIS-approved eID tags at a 47.5 cent discount at point of sale — as long as you’re buying the right colour tag for that year’s lamb drop.

    • 2025 tags = white
    • 2026 tags = orange
    • 2027 tags = light green

But that’s not all. If you need tags that aren’t the colour of the year, you can also apply for a rebate through the Expanded eID Device Rebate program. So it will still cover 25% of the cost, up to 47.5 cents per tag, you will just have to apply for the rebate yourself.

Why all this fuss about eIDs? Well, from the start of this year 2025, all lambs born will need to have an NLIS-accredited eID tag before leaving their property of birth. By 1 January 2027, all sheep (and farmed goats) – regardless of age – will need to be eID tagged before heading off-farm.

It’s a big change, but we’re getting used to it. And it’s aimed at enhancing our traceability and keeping our $4.9 billion livestock industry strong and secure.
