Intergrain has released a new barley for the 2024 season that has many in the industry very excited. Tested as IGB22101T, they say Neo is the complete package. It boasts exceptionally high yield, outstanding disease resistance and extremely promising quality attributes which will revolutionise the barley industry.
Neo is a mid-maturing barley with built-in imidazolinone tolerance that will suit medium-high rainfall environments. Early data shows that Neo will have a 10% yield increase on RGT Planet, meaning it will set a new benchmark across many barley-growing regions. It will be slightly quicker than RGT Planet and have a more weed-competitive plant type to other IMI-tolerant varieties such as Spartacus and Maximus CL.
Neo will have a medium plant height, giving it good tolerance to lodging, good grain retention and tolerance to head loss. Its grain package is also impressive with very good grain plumpness, being a big step up over RGT Planet and a modest improvement in test weight over RGT Planet.
Neo has an outstanding disease resistance profile with excellent resistance to cereal cyst nematode (CCN), powdery mildew, and the spot form net blotch and useful resistance to net form net blotch and leaf scald.
It has been accepted into its malting accreditation program and, at the earliest, will be approved by March 2025.
We expect there to be a lot of interest in Neo Barley so be sure to get an order in early for next season.
